Kumi Koda (倖田來未) is a Japanese singer who has been active from 2000 until present.
Career History[]
Kumi Koda began her solo career with her debut single Take Back in 2000. She gained popularity when her seventh single, Real Emotion/1000 no Kotoba, was used as theme songs for the video game Final Fantasy X-2. Koda initially had a quiet and kind image, but changed to a cool and sexy style around 2004.
She continued to gain popularity and became one of Japan's best-selling artists[1], as well as cementing herself as a style icon for teenagers and young women. Koda is currently still a singer and performer, and continues to release new music.
In Gyaru Culture[]
While Koda was not a Gyaru herself, her image and style influenced gyaru trends throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Blond, dyed hair, as seen on Koda, was a staple for gyaru in the 2000s. She became known for her "ero-kawaii", or sexy-cute style; gyaru also took inspiration from her sexy and edgy style, as well as her care-free attitude.
Koda modelled for various magazines throughout her career, including Popteen and JELLY magazine.
