GALS 1

Anime Series

Super GALS! Kotobuki Ran (超ギャルズ!寿蘭), also known as GALS!, is a manga series that began serialization in Shueisha's Ribon in 1998. It received an anime adaption by Studio Pierrot in 2001.

Super GALS! is one of the most recognisable pieces of media focused around the gyaru lifestyle and culture. The show features various gyaru sub-styles popular around the early 2000s, such as the old-school Gyaru look, Kogal, and Ganguro.

Production[]

The manga ran for 10 volumes from December 25, 1998 to May 1, 2002. The anime series aired from April 1st 2001 to March 31st 2002 with a total of 52 episodes. Of the 52 episodes, 26 episodes were later dubbed by ADV films in 2003-2006, but due to poor sales ADV opted not to license the rest of the show so Nozomi Entertainment released the rest of the series in 2007. Eventually Nozomi Entertainment licensed all 52 episodes and released them in a complete series set in 2010.

Synopsis[]

Super GALS! revolves around Ran Kotobuki, a gyaru girl from Shibuya who is determined to live her entire life as a gal, despite her family's hopes for her becoming a police officer just like her parents and brother. In the midst of all this, Ran is determined to protect Shibuya from many different threaths such as purse-snatchers, pushy guys and gals from other cities. Along with her for the ride are her two best friends, Miyu Yamazaki and Aya Hoshino.

In Popular Culture[]

In June 2021, GALS! collaborated with popular fashion brand CECIL McBEE, and they also collaborated with Egg Magazine in August of 2021.
